The Green Branch is a developer of large-scale reforestation projects in Brazil creating a portfolio of high quality carbon credit projects to supply the Voluntary Carbon Market. We work alongside nature and those depending on it to transform degraded land into resilient forests. Together with our partners, we plant biodiverse forests with native species, striving to bring it back to its original ecosystem and empowering local communities to restore their degraded lands. Role description:

  • Build organized spatial datasets in QGIS that include various data sources and -types;
  • Design and execute GIS analyses to support estimation of GHG potential from the AFOLU sector in line with Verra methodologies;
  • Produce insightful maps of (potential) reforestation sites for feasibility studies, proposals and planning;
  • Conduct spatial analyses for REDD projects, including Land-Use and Land-Cover Change (LUCC) analysis in the forestry sector, mapping deforestation agents and drivers, etc.;
  • Curate and maintain a database of geospatial datasets relevant for GHG estimation and biodiversity monitoring using appropriate data management methods;
  • Development of technical components required for validation and verification of projects for Verra VCS and CCB certification;
  • Provide technical advisory support to our project developers on activities such as sampling designs for field data collection, interpretation of imagery, and spatial modeling of land cover change risk;
  • Designing algorithms in R, Python or others to automate the processes;
  • Academic writing and assisting with Project Documentation;
  • Support reforestation projects in the broadest sense.

Profile and skills:

To be eligible for this position, you are/have:

Completed (at least) a masters in one of the following areas:

  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS); Geographical Information Management and Applications (GIMA); Geomatics; Other studies with adjacent/relevant focusses.
  • Experienced (3+ years) with working on environmental and forestry projects or other relevant working experience;
    Affinity with geospatial coding for creating custom analytical functions, streamlined tools and workflows;
  • Understanding of optical remote sensing as it applies to forest and ecosystem monitoring, land cover change monitoring.
  • Experience with other forms of remote sensing (LiDAR, SAR) is a plus but is not required;
  • Experience in integrating field-based data collection into a GIS through use of GPS, mobile data collection, etc;
  • Foundation in statistical analysis sufficient to design and interpret field-based environmental sampling efforts;
  • Quantification of ecosystem or forest properties through analysis and interpretation of field and/or remote sensing data;
  • Able to document methodological processes and write high-quality academic reports;
  • Knowledgeable in:
    LU/LC analysis;
  • Precision mapping;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, Portuguese is a plus.
